POSITION: Certified Medical Assistant, Patient Care Coordinator
RESPONSIBLE TO: Clinical Supervisor and Administrator
JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the surgeon and providers, prepares patients to see the surgeon, facilitates ancillary tests and pre-operative counseling as needed, and assists with clinical duties as directed.
- High school degree required
- Completion of Medical Assisting program required, Associates program Preferred
- CMA required
- Training in orthopedic surgery assisting a plus
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Neat, professional appearance
- Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor
- Type 40 WPM
- Experience with an Electronic Health Record, eClinicalWorks, preferred
- Two years of experience in a clinical setting preferred
- Knowledge of infection control protocols.
- Excellent communication skills
- Working knowledge of insurance preferred
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides outstanding customer service, by providing information, services, and assistance when needed.
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history and confirming purpose of visit.
- Greets patients and escorts them from the waiting room to exam room
- Obtains vitals and prepares patients to be seen by the physician
- Documents in the electronic health record health history, list of medications, allergies, family and social history
- Retrieves x-rays, MRIs, office notes, etc. for the physician
- Takes phone messages and responds as directed by the physician
- Documents orders, referrals and testing and follows up to ensure patients completed
- Assists surgeon in preparing for examinations and minor procedures
- Draws injectable drugs
- Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization
- Cleans and stocks exam rooms with necessary supplies.
- Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines
- Performs patient education duties; shows surgical videos, hands out brochures, and directs patients to specific Internet sites for more information, when appropriate
- Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to supervisor
- Schedule surgeries and provides pre-operative instructions to patients
- Completes all logs
- Pre-certify tests and/or surgery according to protocol
- Obtains and handles laboratory specimens according to CLIA guidelines
- Dispense DME and ensure billing information is appropriate for
- Schedules and/or arranges for PT per physician orders
- Handle prescription refill requests
- Cleans and closes down laboratory equipment at the end of the day
- Monitors logs of specimens collected and sent to reference lab—ensures reports are returned from the reference lab in a timely manner
- Directs lab results to surgeon for review and treatment plan
- Documents to meet the Meaningful Use requirements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality by following the HIPAA Compliance Plan established by the practice; releases PHI in accordance with the practice's HIPAA Compliance Plan, attends regular HIPAA training, maintains data security by refusing to share computer and other passwords, and reports all identified and suspected HIPAA violations to the Privacy Officer
- Maintains Required CEUs/training as required for licensure
- Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job functions
- Attends annual HIPAA, CPR, and OSHA training programs
- Attends all regular meetings
- All other tasks and projects assigned by the Manager or Surgeon
Access to PHI (Protected Health Information)
This position has extensive access to PHI. It requires the review of computerized or paper-based medical records, lab results, and tests, in order to perform clinical duties as well as communicate effectively with patients. It may also require access to computerized and paper-based reimbursement data (such as referral forms)¾which contain both a patient's clinical and financial information.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Typical Physical Demands
Position requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Employee will occasionally be asked to lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds. Normal visual acuity and hearing are required. Employee will work under stressful conditions, and work irregular hours. Employee will be exposed to bodily fluids on a regular basis.
