Ambulatory Surgery Centers Saving Billions for Medicare and Its Beneficiaries

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) have been providing patients with more than just same-day surgical care. In fact, they have been saving Medicare and its beneficiaries over a billion dollars each year.

According to an analysis by two doctors at the Nicholas C. Petris Center on Health Care Markets and Consumer Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley, ASCs alone were responsible for $7.5 billion in savings for Medicare and its beneficiaries from 2008 to 2011.

The savings have increased each year and are expected to continue to rise as more procedures are offered on an outpatient basis.
