An article recently published on Becker’s Healthcare examined the average cost of inpatient care for hospitals across the nation. This cost not only varied by state but also by the hospital ownership type, such as state/local government, nonprofit, and for-profit.
For a nonfederal, short-term hospital in Ohio whose services are available to the public, the estimate of expenses, including operating and nonoperating expenses, incurred in one day of inpatient care ranged from $2,277 to $3,000 in 2019, according to statistics from the Kaiser Family Foundation State Health Facts.
Hospitals with state/local government and nonprofit ownerships were estimated at $3,000 and $2,969, respectively, while hospitals with for-profit ownership came in at $2,277.
As these figures are only an estimate of a hospital’s expenses and not the actual charges for the care provided, patients might see a different, much larger price tag. However, for those searching for a more affordable option for surgical care, there is another option available.
